Promoting Access to Health Services (P.A.T.H.S.)

Oxford Homeless Pathways has launched this volunteer project to provide vital support for vulnerable patients who attend Luther Street Medical Centre. Volunteers accompany patients to health appointments arranged by the Centre's doctors. All appointments are within Oxford City.

The PATHS project is not currently taking on new volunteers, but will be recruiting and running another training course in 2011. If you would be interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Jan Penrose, PATHS Volunteer Coordinator, on ohmfvolunteers@btconnect.com, 01865 792126, giving your name and contact details, and she will be in touch with you when the next training is being planned.

Alternatively, you are welcome to complete an application form and send it in now, and we will contact you nearer the time of the next training. If you would just like to chat about the possibility of becoming a volunteer, do not hesitate to contact Jan any time.

Why patients need your support

Luther Street Medical Centre is a medical practice that works exclusively with homeless people. Many of their patients lead chaotic lives, suffer from a chronic lack of confidence, and may feel threatened by places and people they are not familiar with. So they often do not attend hospital and other health related appointments arranged for them by Luther Street. This can seriously damage the already poor health that many of them suffer.

The PATHS project provides volunteers who can go with patients to their appointments, helping them to remember the time and day, find the their way there and back, and to feel confident enough to deal with new health staff.
